Improving Higher Education in Mathematics and Compurter Science

Symposium at the University of Education in Ludwigsburg on 2009/11/20 - 21

Higher Education in change

Lately, from various sides insisted that the quality of university teaching should be improved. In particular, mathematics plays a special role, because it is an essential part of many other disciplines and is often is designated as a filtering course. The implementation of effective educational and methodological approaches is difficult determined by the usually large number of participants in the courses. Individual support is hardly possible or only at great personal expense or with the time-use of e-learning systems. Computer science teaching is often similar in structure to the teaching of mathematics (lecture plus exercises) and has the same abstract structure for content. Therefore it can be expected that the two subjects of mutual exchanges on didactics and methodology can benefit. Many mathematics and computer science lecturers have developed best practices over the years, how they make lecture, how they make the students to take the exercises to work with and how they can use digital media. The aim of the symposium is to exchange best practices and effective approaches and to establish a sustainable community of practice for the Improvement of Higher Education.

An Open Space Conference for Higher Education

The symposium will take place at the University of Education, and from Fr., 09/11/20 at 13 o'clock to Sa., 09/11/21, 15 o'clock. This is not a traditional conference with presentations, but an "Open Space Conference". With this type of event spaces are available in various themes offered for discussion. Participants flexibly switch between different spaces. The results are then recorded and made available for the entire group. On Friday afternoon there is an "extended coffee break" in which several current and completed projects can be presented with posters or demos. To ensure the work a digital symposium volume is planned in which the participants jointly hold on the findings that have been made during the Open Space about university or projects. This is not necessarily the aspects which the participants in the motivation letter (see registration) have been described - the contents are evolving out of the symposium. In addition to the substantive discussion is also planned to start a GDM-Workgroup "Higher Education Teaching Mathematics at the symposium.

Registration

If you would like to take part in the symposium, send us a one-sided "letter of motivation" until 09/09/15. Write about your interests regarding the topics of the symposium. You can decide whether the focus lies on concepts you have developed for higher education in mathematics and/or computer science, or on experiences you have made with blended learning in these contexts, or on questions you would like to discuss with other experts at the symposium. Please send the letter of motivation to . Please write as subject: "Registration" or "Letter of motivation" First a maximum of two members from each institute / reseach project can participate, and perhaps more if the overall number of registrations is low. Your letter of motivation will be reviewed in order to decide on your participation. After the review process is finished, you will perhaps be asked to modify and enhance your letter of motivation. The letter of motivation will be sent to all participants of the symposium to inform everyone about the interests of the other members. The participation fee is 30€ per person.
